A design for the sustainable refurbishment and extension of a historic steading building in Strathpeffer
Strathpeffer, Scotland
Nutwood Steading is a project for the conversion of a historic coach house and stable to a sustainable family home.
The existing Victorian-era building is charming but in a derelict state. The steading includes high-quality local stonework and some beautiful historic features.
The brief was to retain and upgrade the existing buildings creating a spacious and modern, energy-efficient family home while remaining the sensitive to beautiful historic buildings and their setting.
The project called for the rebuilding and upgrading of the two existing buildings. An additional flexible workshop space was created, linked to the main building by a glazed walkway. Initially envisioned as a workshop, this space could later convert to a guest wing or carer’s quarter’s to ensure full generational design.
It was important the design used a low embodied carbon approach to material selection and have a high energy performance.
The client required the site to be fossil fuel-free, requiring a biomass boiler for primary heating. Whilst still connected to the grid, Photovoltaic (solar) panels on the south-facing roofs were used to create on-site energy.
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
